SMALL COMPOSITE PEDAL SERVICE INSTRUCTIONS

Things You Will Need

  • Composite pedal rebuild kit (SP1C0093) 
  • 8,10mm Sockets
  • 6 & 8mm Hex Key
  • Flathead screwdriver
  • Hooked pick tool
  • Light hammer
  • Waterproof Grease
  • Optional: pedal wrench

Pedal Service: Approximately 20 minutes     Difficulty: Moderate 

COMPLETE EXPLODED VIEW & PARTS LIST

We recommend that you look at the Exploded view & read ALL steps of the service instructions before you begin.

We recommend servicing one pedal at a time as the Right/drive side axle nut (1) is Reverse threaded.

LEFT PEDAL : Coated lock nut. (Black color) RIGHT PEDAL: Chrome plated lock nut. (silver)

NOTE: You can perform this service without removing the pedal from the crank, however, we recommend servicing your pedals on your work bench or clean surface.

 

DISASSEMBLY 

STEP 1: END CAP REMOVAL

Using your 6mm Hex key, unthread the pedal body cap (7) from the pedal body (4).

 

 

STEP 2: LOCK NUT REMOVAL

While holding the axle (8) with your pedal wrench or 8mm Hex key, insert the 8mm deep socket and remove the axle nut (7) from within the pedal body (4). Once the nut is fully removed your axle will slide out.


STEP 3: AXLE & AXLE SEAL REMOVAL

 Axle (8) will slide out easily now. Remove the axle seal (6).


STEP 4: WASHER & BEARING REMOVAL

Push bearing (2) & washer (10) out with the long end of your 6 or 8mm Hex key. As the bearing comes out, be sure to catch the washer before it drops & gets lost.


STEP 5: BUSHING REMOVAL

Note: This DU bushing is single use and will very likely be damaged upon removal. If you do not have a rebuild kit on hand, or if your just doing a clean and grease, do not remove the DU bushing.

Using your hooked pick tool, push the inner edge of the DU bushing (9) out of the pedal body (4). This DU bushing sits flush with the inner diameter of the pedal body so it may require a bit of picking to get purchase on the inner edge. 

 


STEP 6: CLEANING & ASSESSMENT

Clean old grease and any grit, dirt or grime from the axle (8) & inside of the pedal body (4).


Assess all components for damage, dirt, wear


ASSEMBLY

STEP 7: AXLE SEAL

Slide new axle seal (6) all the way onto the axle (8). 

Proper installation of this seal is crucial to keeping grit and water out of your pedals. Without it you risk premature failure to the bushing, bearing and axle.

 

 

STEP 8: GREASE COMPONENTS

Once axle seal (6) is installed in the correct position, grease new bushing, bearing and axle before installing.

 

STEP 9: INSTALL BUSHING

Push the DU bushing (9) into the pedal body (6) by hand you cant any further. A DU bushing press is ideal to set the DU bushing in place. If you do not have this, a 10mm socket and a Light hammer can be used to tap the DU bushing until it bottoms out on its seat within the pedal body. This only requires light tapping with the hammer, be careful not to mash anything during installation.


STEP 10: INSTALL BEARING & WASHER

Push the bearing (2) into the pedal body (4) using the 8mm deep socket until it is seated. Carefully place the bearing washer (10) so that it is sitting centered & flat on the bearing (2). 


STEP 11: INSTALL AXLE

Push the freshly greased axle (8) into the pedal body (4). 

 

STEP 12: INSTALL AXLE NUT

While holding the axle (8) with your pedal wrench or 8mm Hex key, Use your 8mm socket to tighten the axle nut (1) to 3-4Nm. 


NOTE: Be sure to use the correct lock nut to avoid cross threading your nut or axle.

STEP 13: INSTALL END CAP

Using your 6mm Hex key, thread the end cap (7) into the pedal body (4) until torqued to 2-3Nm.

 

 Repeat all steps for the second pedal.

 

STEP 14: INSTALL PEDALS

Once both pedals have been serviced and any excess grease ahs been wiped off. add a small amount of grease to the pedal threads and install them into your cranks.

 

Congratulations, you have now successfully serviced your composite pedals.
